THREE LONG TERM RESIDENTS ADOPTED!

Being a no-kill rescue means that when we take in an animal, we are dedicated to them as long as it takes to find the right forever home. It also means that some of our animals will be with us for a very long time - and we've past the 2 year mark on quite a few. We just know the perfect forever home will come along for them one day!

June and July were special months for Furry Kids because 3 of these animals finally found wonderful forever homes!!

Scamp, a beautiful long haired Maine Coon mix who had been our featured cat for many months finally found a terrific guy to take him home. According to his new "dad", Scamp is doing great in his new home! Here is a note from Scamp's new dad: "Well, I was interested in finding a Maine Coon cat because I had seen and read about them and I thought they would be a good pet. So my brother and me searched online and found petfinder.com and looked there and we saw Scamps picture and Bio and we said He is the one. He looked really great, as he still does, and that he got along with dogs and other cats. Just looking at his picture you could tell he has a great personality, and he does, he loves alot of attention and he has a big house to play in."

Secondly, we originally pulled Angel from the Independence Shelter - she was left there after she had had a litter of pups and they had all been adopted. No one adopted Angel and her time was up. We certainly couldn't let her die in the shelter. She had been our featured dog in this newsletter for a very long time when she finally found a fantastic new mom and dad who have been very dedicated to working with her through some pretty serious issues! Angel is smart and knows quite a few commands thanks to her foster mom, however, poor Angel suffers from separation anxiety and has destroyed quite a few things around the house. We are so impressed with her new mom and dad because while we feared Angel would need to come back, they have stuck with her and worked very hard to solve her separation anxiety issues. She's a GREAT dog and they do love her - and we sure hope that one day soon she will be able to roam free in the house!! :)

Tanner is such a beautiful white husky/shepherd mix who originally came to us as an owner surrender, someone who no longer wanted him. We thought for sure he'd be adopted quickly because he's so handsome but quite the contrary. He'd been with us for a couple of years when we received a great application from a super nice lady who just fell in love with his picture! She had a dog who looked very similar to Tanner and she's just sure he's "the one" to add to her family. He was just adopted last week so our paws are crossed that he adjusts quickly and fits in like a glove with his new family!

It is very special to all of us when a long time resident finally gets adopted. We have so many great dogs and cats just like Scamp, Angel and Tanner who have simply been overlooked by potential adopters. If you are considering adoption, please consider one of our adult cats or dogs - and know that separation anxiety is not an issue with every adult dog ;-)

MIRACLE "MIRA" - AMAZING RESCUE EFFORT FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY

If you ever doubt that miracles exist, just look to Mira. For those who spend their energies, resources and every free moment of every day trying to right the wrongs of those who routinely discard their animals like the day’s trash - this is a glimmer of hope. It didn’t start out as anything out of the ordinary, but for one lowly little gray-muzzled dog, who seemingly came out of no where and became yet another lost dog coming into the Independence Animal Services Shelter - she allowed us all to witness miracles.

And while the world races around us and gas prices, foreclosures of homes and war preoccupies our minds, for just a fleeting few moments, one little black dog diverted us and offered a glimmer of hope. Let’s keep that hope going to now be extended to the many thousands of homeless animals in our shelters this very moment. May Mira’s miracle, be paid forward to give the same  to the aged, infirmed and imperfect animals who now wait.

Read about Mira's Miracle on our website, we will post updates as time goes on...

REMEMBER YOUR PETS DURING THE HOT SUMMER MONTHS!

Please remember that our pets can suffer from heat related illnesses easier than us humans can. They don't know to drink enough water like we know to do and they can absorb the heat into their body more readily. Dogs and cats pant to cool themselves and they actually sweat through the pads of their feet! Sill, an animal can suffer from a heat stroke very easily when temperatures rise...

True Story ~ One of my friends recently almost lost her dog to heat stroke.  After one week, the dog was still not back to normal....
She was playing at the lake and thought that being in the water would keep her dog cool enough.  WRONG !  They played catch, chase, and frisbee for two hours as the dog just wanted to keep playing.  WRONG !  The human in control should stop before the dog collapses.  The dog fell in its tracks and went into a seizure.  Her body temperature could not be cooled down, as the inner organs had reached too high a temperature.  Her organs and brain had already begun to swell.  They rushed her to the emergency clinic in the nick of time, to save her life.  She had to be given intravenous fluids and other emergency measures had to be taken to stabilize her entire body.   She was lucky and was able to get her to the emergency clinic in time.

Featured Dog - HANK JR - Wouldn't you love a sloppy kiss from this great dog

THIS IS THE BEST LAB IN THE WORLD! Hank Junior is a ball of energy and full of people love. Hank Jr. loves to play in the yard with balls or anything he can pick up in his mouth and play keep-away with. He lights up when people come around and just wants his belly scratched. Hank Jr actually sleeps on his back like a person - we think just in case someone would happen to want to scratch his tummy!! He is a loverboy and he is housetrained. The only catch is that Hank Jr. should go to a family who doesn't have any other dogs or cats, he wants to be an only dog. He really needs a 6' privacy fence because this ornry boy can jump a 4' fence. Please don't let these things deter you because he is really a great dog, he just needs a chance to show you that! And, Furry Kids volunteers will spend time with you giving you some pointers on how to walk him without having him pull you around the neighborhood :) Hank Jr was rescued from the Independence shelter quite some time ago where he was out of time. Such a great furry kid could not be lost so we rescued him and he is looking for a family to call his own. Please give Hank Jr a chance in your search for a new companion - you'd be giving a dog a home who has been searching for a very long time....

Featured Cat - TALULAH - Just let her crawl into your lap and purrrr!

Talulah is such a sweet heart! She needs a loving home. If you'll notice, both our featured dog and cat have black coats. So many times, black dogs and cats are overlooked because their coats don't stand out. We hope you'll notice these two wonderful animals, though! Talulah will make a wonderful companion - she just needs to be noticed by that special person who will fall in love with her! She's just a few years old, uses her litter box and loves attention! She has gorgeous eyes and a sleek black coat. If you'd like to know more about Talulah, please email us or fill out an application from our website (click on "Adopt A Cat") today!
