Happy Holidays!

At this special time of year, we would like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has supported Furry Kids Refuge throughout the year. Our dedicated volunteers and foster families, our contributors and supporters, our donors, and all the kind people who help us ensure that homeless and abandoned animals continue to get the chance that they so deserve.

THANKS to your support, Furry Kids has been able to provide second chances for hundreds of animals in 2009. As you continue to read this newsletter, you will read about two of those second chances...Jerry and Howie:

Jerry, a beautiful Dapple Dachshund who spent the first years of his life confined to a cage in a Puppy Mill. When Jerry first came to Furry Kids he was absolutely terrified and did not know how to be a normal dog. When Jerry was put on grass for the first time and he just stood there looking scared and not knowing what to do.... a Puppy Mill dog has no idea what grass is or how much fun it can be to roll around in it!! Luckily for Jerry, now known as Pepper, your support allowed Furry Kids to rescue him, get him the healthcare that he needed, and find him a wonderful forever home. Read more about Jerry in the FURRY KID HAPPY TAIL below.

Howie, an absolutely adorable Yorkshire Terrier puppy, was born in a Puppy Mill but because of his deformed legs, was considered damaged goods. Howie could barely get around because his back legs didn't work like they were supposed to and desperately needed veterinary care. Again, your support allowed Furry Kids to rescue Howie and provide him with the care that would allow this unwanted puppy to grow up to be a normal dog in a loving home. Read more about Howie in the SPECIAL NEEDS PETS section below.

These are just two of many examples of animals that have been saved by your support and generosity. As a non-profit rescue organization, we rely on individuals like you as all of our resources come from donations. If you would like to make a donation that will help us continue the worthwhile efforts of rescuing animals that so disparately need our help, please click on DONATE button above. Remember, all donations are TAX DEDUCTIBLE!! Thanks again for all your support....HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!!!

THANK YOU, CASEY!!!

Casey & RosebudA HUGE Thank You goes out to Casey Cunningham for selflessly giving up Birthday gifts and instead collecting food donations for Furry Kids Refuge. Casey collected 600 pounds of food!  WHOA!  She now spends many of her Saturdays helping out at Furry Kids Adoption events.  Casey is a true animal lover and an absolute sweetheart! :)

Furry Kids is so thankful to Casey for her generosity...what she did was very thoughtful and I'm sure made her family very proud. We are proud of her too and we are very appreciative!!

Special Needs Petss

Furry Kids is especially in tuned with animals who have special needs. As a group, we rescue a lot of well adjusted, healthy dogs who find loving forever homes quickly.  Then there are those that have issues that make them not-so-highly adoptable...like "Howie."

Howie enjoying the snow..A pure-bred Yorkshire Terrier puppy, rescued from a puppy-mill breeder, Howie was born with "bilateral hind-limb paresis." The best way to describe it is that Howie did not have knee joints in his back legs. As a result, he was unable to walk or stand normally. The vet recommended taping his back legs together to help make Howie use them and to make the legs stronger. Carla, his foster mom, diligently did this every day while caring for him and developed a strong bond with this little guy. Carla wondered if Howie would be able to find a forever home...would there be someone willing to provide the daily care needed to help this puppy live a full and productive life? Luckily for Howie, the answer was "YES!!" Howie was adopted by a wonderful family who have done a marvelous job in caring for him. Here is an excerpt from a recent email from his forever family...

"As I type this email, Howie is lying on my dad's lap sleeping. He's in the winter spirit wearing a blue snowflake sweater. Wait, scratch that last bit he just woke up and had to bark at our cats for making noise. He is such a goofball! He loves our two other dogs, Stormy and Tinkerbell. He always is playing with them. Howie has everything! Tons of shirts, sweaters, hoodies and coats to stay warm, plenty of toys and good food and treats...

Howie in his Converse shoesHe has really grown up. He averages at about 8.6 pounds and is about a foot long. ... But best of all his legs are tons better! He never has to be taped anymore. He can jump up to try to get on things and is very close to getting up. He jumps down just fine, handles stairs like they're nothing and can almost keep up with the other dogs.
We found out after his first walk that he drags his back feet when walking and when on concrete it rubs his claws and toes down and makes them bleed. So, we bought him shoes. He has been through 3 pairs and right now has some doggie converse that are blue camouflage. He also has some red winter boots!"

Happy Birthday, Howie!Howie just celebrated his 1st birthday and it's obvious from all the pictures that his family sent us, Howie hit the jackpot! His back legs are now stronger than ever and while he doesn't have "perfect" legs, he gets around just fine. Check out this video of Howie playing with one of his siblings...(Howie is the one in the blue sweater) As you can tell from this story and the video, Howie's family has done a wonderful job taking care of him and he now lives the life he so deserved.

We hope other potential adopters will consider a special needs pet in their search for a family pet. Special Needs most often just means someone special is about to steal your heart!!

FURRY KID "HAPPY TAIL"

Dear Furry Kids Friends,

You may remember me as Jerry, although my new family has decided to name me Pepper (they think I look like I came out of a pepper shaker).  I just wanted to tell you how happy I am in my new home.  When I first got adopted, the nice lady, who is my new Mom,  held me in her lap all the way home.  I was really scared, but she seemed pretty nice.  She kept petting me and telling me it would be all right.

PepperWe got to my new house and I met another nice dog, his name is Diego.  He belongs to one of my new Mom's grown up sons.  Diego is my best friend and I really, really like him.  He has really helped me adjust to my new home.  I was really scared of things like stairs.  I had to learn to go in and outdoors by going up and down 3 steps and they were really scary.  Diego ran up and down the stairs over and over to help me learn how to go in and out.  I could see that everyone was really nice to him, and I wanted to get loved like that too.  So I just followed his lead.  He's the best friend ever!

There's a kitty here too, named Harley.  He purrs alot, and I like to play with him.  I have all sorts of new squeaky toys and balls to chase.  Sometimes Harley makes squeaky noises too, and sometimes he rumbles, Mom says he is "purring".  This is just the best place ever.  I have a warm soft bed in the living room and another one in the bedroom.  My new Mom says I am coming out of my shell (whatever that means) and am finally acting like a regular dachshund--running, playing and barking.  I like barking.  :)

I never thought I'd have a nice home like this when you rescued me from that breeder guy.  I still feel a little scared of men, but my Mom's sons, who are both very grown up, are so nice to me, I think it's going to be all right.  They have really good food here, which is great, since I sort of don't have very many teeth.  But they are careful about what they feed me, and I am never hungry.

PepperI am sending you some pictures of me at my new house.  I just wanted to say Thanks so much for rescuing me, and for helping me find my new family.  Please tell my foster Mom I am doing fine, she is such a nice lady, too.

I hope everyone else finds a new family as nice as mine.
Love,
Pepper (aka, Jerry)
