October is National Adopt A Shelter Dog Month!
National Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month is a great time to consider adopting a dog from your local shelter or rescue group. Millions of animals are killed in shelters across the United States each year. By adopting a Shelter Dog, you can save a life and help reduce that number. Rescues, such as Furry Kids, help reduce those numbers too by bringing dogs and cats into our program and into foster care.
Being a "no-kill" organization means that we do not euthanize to make space for another animal. All of our Furry Kids are safe with us until they are adopted. As a result, we take the risk of having animals in our program for any length of time, and some of our animals have been with us for over a year. Take Tyler and his sister Tulip, for example, who are were adopted from us as puppies but came back to us because their owners could no longer care for them. They are both sweet, playful dogs who get along with everyone. All they need is a chance!
Please consider making a new addition to your family during this National Adopt-a-Shelter Dog month And, by adopting one dog, you actually save the life of two because it allows us to save another animal by bringing one into our program. And we have so many wonderful Furry Kids available for adoption; you can meet all our adoptable dogs on Petfinder.com!
P. S. If you're unable to adopt a dog for National Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month in October, there are other things you can do that will make a positive impact. Furry Kids is always in need of good foster homes, which can be very rewarding….think about it...:-) |

THANK YOU, TARA!!!
 |
A HUGE Thank You goes out to Tara Persell for selflessly giving up Birthday gifts and asking, instead, for gifts for the Furry Kids Refuge animals. Tara, who turned 9 years old in September, is a great animal lover. For her Birthday party, Tara didn't want any presents for herself but instead asked for the girls to bring donations for the animals.
As you can see from the picture, Tara's friends brought lots of goodies including toys, treats, food, collars, leashes and more! We are so thankful to Tara for her generosity...what she did was very thoughtful and I'm sure made her family very proud. We are proud of her too and we are very appreciative!! THANK YOU, Tara!!

RESCUES & RUNWAYS

|
maurices clothing store in Lee’s Summit recently selected Furry Kids as the beneficiary of their Rescues & Runways donation drive. Many generous people donated treats, toys and food during the month of September at their store in the Summit Woods Shopping Center. Then as a grand finale, a Fashion Show and Silent Auction were held on Oct 3. Several of our Furry Kids attended the event and they were a huge hit with the crowd! Thank you to maurices for supporting Furry Kids and your local community. |

As no-kill rescuers, we are responsible for each and every animal we rescue. Often times we don't know anything about the history of the dog or cat that comes in to our care however, we take great strides to find out as much as we can about them before making them available for adoption. We rely greatly on our Veterinarians to help us assess any medical issues and we spend a lot of time getting to know each animal so that we can place them in the right home.
Sometimes, though, we take in a dog who we find has serious medical issues that deem them "unadoptable." Once in a while the right home can be found for an elderly dog or one that might have other manageable issues but there are those we realize will remain in our care forever. Such is the case of "Louise" who we rescued last year from the Leavenworth, KS city shelter. She was about 6 months old and was apparently a healthy, happy girl. A great family adopted her but shortly thereafter Louise started to have cluster grand mal seizures. As much as they tried, it was too emotionally taxing for this family to care for her (they had lost their previous dog to epilepsy) so she came back in to our care.
Louise remains with me to this day. She is averaging cluster seizures about every 4 weeks and takes a lot of medication to help keep them at bay. Some would say she is an epileptic but she was technically too young to be diagnosed with this disease. Epilepsy in a dog actually means "seizures from an unknown cause". There may be something wrong in Louise's brain that was there from birth or she may have had some kind of an injury as a puppy that could cause them. We'd love to do an MRI, which would give us more insight as to what is going on in her brain, but we simply can't afford to do so. We have spend a lot of time with our Veterinarians and have even visited with the neurologist at VSEC in Overland Park. The only thing we can do for Louise is keep her on the meds and manage the seizures the best we can.
Otherwise, Louise loves to run and and play with other dogs and she absolutely loves to swim. I keep a close eye on her and when the seizures come, I hold her tight and give her the proper meds to help the seizure end. She's part of the family now and we affectionately call her "Weezie." Her best buddy is my Border Collie whom she pesters constantly. Yes, she's a little quirky but you can't help but love her to pieces. She is a special needs Furry Kid, one we rescued with an unknown serious medical issue, and even so, she has a loving home with us forever.
We will continue to highlight our special needs Furry Kids in our upcoming newsletters. It is part of what we do as a no-kill rescue and we feel these dogs deserve the love of a family just like any other happy healthy dog. They are all worth the effort!!

SPECIAL MEMORIAL TRIBUTE

|
Furry Kids is fortunate to have met many families and individuals who have opened up their homes and their hearts to our wonderful rescue animals. Often times we develop some great relationships and have been able to get to know some wonderful people. One of those individuals was Jan Burns, who adopted "Nala", a beautiful Sheltie.
Jan and Nala were a perfect match and Nala could not have found a more perfect forever home. You can see from the picture how much Jan loved and cared for Nala. We were saddened to learn that Nala went over the Rainbow Bridge a few months ago. We were attempting to find another dog for Jan when we learned that Jan had passed away. We were very saddened to hear this news and our deepest sympathies go out to Jan's family and friends. When we think of Jan in the future we'll remember this picture and imagine that Jan and Nala are sitting together enjoying each others company in heaven...and we will smile. Featured Dog - REDMOND - Make His Day, Give Him A Chance! |
Redmond is an Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler mix. He's about 1 year old, full grown and weighs around 55 pounds. Redmond gets along with everybody and is wonderful around kids. He loves other dogs and he LOVES to go swimming!! Redmond has a beautiful red coat...very soft and cuddly!! He can jump a 42' fence so his new home would have to have a fenced-in yard with a 4'-6' fence. Redmond is an AWESOME dog! He would be a great addition to your family!!
Read more about Redmond on his Petfinder page!

Featured Cat - MARLENE - Please consider giving her a loving home!
 |
Marlene is a wonderful cat who has a motherly instinct. She came to Furry Kids because her previous owners really didn't want to put a litter box in their house. Marlene nursed a very ill kitten who wasn't even her own - what an honorable thing to try to do.
She about 4 years old and is a beautiful grey and tan tortoiseshell with big gorgeous eyes. Marlene loves attention and likes to keep you company...and she gets along well with other cats!
Please check out Marlene's Petfinder page!
