ABOUT US
We are a no-kill, all volunteer animal rescue organization which started in the year 2003 by founder Carla Wing. Furry Kids’ Refuge was established to benefit the public at large by supporting local animal control agencies in their efforts to reduce the number of homeless companion animals. In June 2005, Furry Kids’ Refuge was established as a Missouri Not-for-Profit Corporation and a Federal 501(c) (3) charitable organization animal rescue that operates with a network of foster homes, a small facility and many dedicated volunteers.
Furry Kids’ Refuge has been rescuing animals from high-kill shelters in the Kansas City and Nevada, MO area for many years but our efforts do not stop with shelters. We also rescue neglected adult dogs and puppies from breeders, abandoned pets, owner surrender companion animals, strays, abuse cases and loving pets displaced due to death of their owners.
All animals in our care are spayed or neutered, receive all vaccinations, and if necessary, life saving medical attention. When these foster animals are emotionally and physically healed, we search for the appropriate human companion for each, helping to ensure a loving, forever home. To date, we have rescued over 5,000 animals!!
Our volunteers are the heart and soul of Furry Kids’ Refuge! They volunteers spend their personal time to find forever homes for the animals in our program then go back out to rescue more homeless and desperate animals. We are mostly an all-volunteer rescue and we do have a small boarding facility that is not open to the public. This houses dogs that are being evaluated either medically or for behavior before they are ready to go to a foster home. These dogs are cared for by 1 full-time and 1 part time employee. We hold adoption events each Saturday at Lee’s Summit Petco. Each event requires we physically set up an environment that is comfortable not only for the animals we bring out, but also for the potential adopters that come to meet them.
Furry Kid volunteers also support efforts that help to reduce the number of adoptable companion animals that are euthanized by animal shelters, eliminate the homeless animal population in the Midwest region, and promote low-cost spay/neuter clinics. We realize our limitations in that we cannot save all companion animals, but by working together, we help those we can. We strive to educate the public on the proper and compassionate ways to care for their animals, including the necessity of spaying and neutering companion animals to help relieve pet overpopulation. Volunteers find, display and provide educational materials free to the public on pet care, behavior, nutrition, training, heartworm prevention, and human-animal bonding.
Our group has operated over the past years with funding from friends, family and supporters to pay for veterinary costs, boarding, transportation and food for our rescued animals. Annually, we spent over $85,000 on veterinary costs. The adoption fees we charge go toward recovering a portion of the cost of veterinary care; as you can imagine the fees can not cover all the costs incurred. Donations are small and every penny is used to care for and saving these loving pets. Without all our dedicated volunteers, fosters, and loyal supporters, Furry Kids would not be able to save as many wonderful animals as we have. Thank you to all the kind people who help us continue these efforts!
Our organization strongly believes that all animals deserve respect and should be treated with dignity in all circumstances. We strive to have all people share this philosophy, creating a healthier and kinder community for humans and animals alike.
We appreciate you taking the time to learn about who we are and about our mission.
